Do small things consistently every day over a long period of time!

Alan Berg, CSP, Global Speaking Fellow

Do small things consistently every day over a long period of time.

Are the big goals in your business or life starting to feel overwhelming? What if you could make real progress just by showing up a little bit each day? In this episode, I explore how small, consistent actions compound over time—whether you're learning a language, building a website, or mastering a new skill. What streak could you start today that would move you closer to your goals? How can you make big tasks feel less daunting by breaking them down into manageable daily actions?

Listen to this new 10-minute episode for inspiration on how simple, repeated efforts can lead to big changes and the motivation you need to start—or restart—your own streak.

Are you doing small things consistently every day over a long period of time? Listen to this episode. See where I'm going. Hey, it's Alan Berg. Welcome back to another episode of the Wedding Business Solutions podcast. I recently had Clint Pulver on talking about his book I Love It Here, and one of the stories that he told is about James Lawrence, who's called the Iron Cowboy. In the book, he spoke about how James had done 50 Ironman triathlons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days.

So that means every day he did an Ironman triathlon and then went to another state and another state, another state, and did one of these every day. Doing one of these things is a feat: a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run, a full marathon. Doing each of those in one day—and he did it in 50 states. He’s actually done something called the Conquer 100 Challenge. He did 101 on 101 consecutive days. Just imagine someone doing a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, 26.2-mile run, and then doing another one the next day, the next day, the next day for 101 days in a row.

And when asked how he did the 50/50 challenge, he said it’s by doing small things consistently every day over a long period of time. Some of you might have seen that I occasionally post my streak on Duolingo. I'm learning French, and Duolingo will come up with milestones I've hit. Every time I put one up, I say it's just a number and I'm not here to brag. I want to encourage you that if you would do something every day—just a little bit every day—for a lot of days, you will do it better or accomplish more. If you want to learn to crochet better, to bake bread better, to run better, to learn a language better—whatever it is—doing it consistently matters. People have said I'm good with languages. I don’t know if that’s true, but I know that after 1700+ days in a row, if I had done anything for those 1700 days, I'd be better. Push-ups, ukulele—whatever it is—I'd be better at that, and so would you.

So the question is: what small thing can you do every day, consistently, over a long period of time? What are you trying to accomplish? The big task always seems overwhelming. In my book Your Attitude for Success, there's a chapter called “Don’t Paint the House.” You can't paint a house all at once, but you can paint a wall today. Or go get the paint, the brushes, the drop cloths. Do something toward the end goal. Don’t build your whole new website today, but maybe gather some photos or use AI to update the text to better speak to your current audience. What can you do today that moves you forward?

Duolingo is gamified, so it reminds me every day: “Don’t miss your streak, Alan.” I used to worry about the league I was in—moving up based on points—but then I realized I don’t care about the league. I care about the streak. The consistency. Not whether I do ten lessons today or one. Did I do something?

If you've heard me talk about purposeful practice—doing something with the intention of getting better—you also become okay with it being difficult. When I go for my walk, my first lesson of the day is an AI conversation. It's difficult, because when I'm forming sentences, it takes time. If you speak to me, my brain still freezes a bit. This forces me to get quicker. It’s uncomfortable, but necessary. It's enjoyable when I see progress—when I can actually respond and express myself. That comes from 1700 days of incremental improvement.

You know the expression: When's the best time to plant a tree? Twenty years ago. When's the second best time? Today. What streak can you start today? A streak of one becomes a streak of two tomorrow, then three.

My friends Alan Marshall and Bill Herman have been walking every day for over 2000 days. What could you do every day that would make a difference? I love going for the walk because I can do that lesson, but I can’t do my written French lessons while walking. So that's when I listen to audiobooks. That's how I “read” so many books. I used to never read—ever. Audiobooks changed everything. I can listen while walking, driving, traveling, exercising. Some are fun, some are educational. I’ve gone back to classics like 1984 and Don Quixote. A little bit every day adds up.

If you broke a streak, start again. Nothing is lost. On Duolingo I can use a streak freeze, but it doesn’t really matter. What matters is the goal. My goal is to go to France next year and actually be able to speak French. Not perfectly—just functionally. That's what keeps me going. You pick your own goal.

Look back after three months, six months, a year, and you’ll see how far you've come. It doesn’t happen overnight. It happens by doing small things consistently every day over a long period of time. And if you want to see a really interesting story, look up James Lawrence, the Iron Cowboy. 101 Ironman-distance triathlons in 101 days. Amazing.

What are you trying to achieve? Do small things consistently every day over a long period of time. I hope this gives you inspiration. Start a streak today or continue the one you’re already on. Thanks for listening.
